What is a High Vacuum Gate Valve?

A high vacuum gate valve is a specialized valve designed to isolate sections of a vacuum system without compromising the vacuum environment. Unlike other valves, gate valves use a flat or wedge-shaped gate that moves perpendicular to the flow path, effectively sealing off the vacuum chamber when closed. These valves are engineered to operate within extremely low-pressure ranges, often down to 1 × 10⁻⁸ mbar or lower, making them ideal for applications requiring contamination-free and leak-tight isolation.

Key Features of High Vacuum Gate Valves

Modern high vacuum gate valves incorporate advanced technologies and robust materials to meet demanding vacuum isolation requirements. Here are some of the standout features commonly found in top-quality valves:
1. Vat Lock Technology
One of the most innovative sealing mechanisms, VAT lock technology, ensures reliable sealing without friction at the gate seal. This mechanism mechanically locks the gate in the closed position, preventing valve failures and enhancing safety during operation. This technology is a hallmark of the VAT Group's high vacuum gate valve series, including the popular 11.1, 14.0, and 17.2 models.
2. Robust Stainless Steel Construction
High vacuum gate valves typically feature bodies made from stainless steel grades such as AISI 304 or AISI 316L, providing excellent corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and compatibility with vacuum systems. The use of welded metal bellows or rotary feedthroughs further ensures leak-tight operation.
3. High Cycle Durability
Designed for longevity, these valves can withstand up to 200,000 cycles before requiring maintenance, significantly reducing downtime and cost of ownership.
4. Versatile Actuation Options
Available in manual (crank handle or lever), pneumatic double-acting, and 3-position pneumatic versions, high vacuum gate valves offer flexibility in operation. Pneumatic valves often come with solenoid valve control, allowing remote operation and integration into automated systems.
5. Multiple Flange Connection Standards
To fit diverse vacuum systems, these valves support various flange types such as ISO-F, CF-F, ASA-LP, and JIS. Customer-specific flanges, with or without water cooling options, can also be integrated.
